We spoke out when this happened to our @nytimesguild.bsky.social members and were joined by a chorus of press freedom and advocacy groups around the country. We will always stand behind our members and for a free press. Democracy depends on journalism.

Good news.

Our wages are lagging far behind inflation. Our union's wage proposal simply makes us whole after years of losing buying power. But management's proposal wouldn't even cover this year's inflation.

“ProPublica can be extremely generous with its senior reporters,” says reporter Doug Bock Clark, “but for entry level people… they’re not getting paid enough.” We need contract language that ensures fair wages for all ProPublica employees.

Under @edsource.org management’s proposal, most of us would get fewer than 18 weeks of severance if we are laid off for no fault of our own. After 38 years in the business, senior reporter Diana Lambert thinks that she – and her coworkers – deserve better.

“I’m frustrated because management is not agreeing to a basic cornerstone of every union contract,” says news apps developer Al Shaw. Seniority-based layoff protections are important both for protecting long-time staffers AND for ensuring layoffs can’t be used to circumvent Just Cause protections.

Management has refused to grant us reasonable cost-of-living raises during nearly 18 months of bargaining, and now we’re fighting to make up the ground we’ve lost in an era of historic inflation.

“I really care about A.I. in this contract and getting really strong guardrails to protect our work,” says grants coordinator Eli Oberman. Management has said they want to have responsible A.I. policies – but we need them to put those policies in a contract!
