#Spain: Together with the @ifjglobal.bsky.social and our Spanish members, we express our full solidarity with elDiario.es, its director, and its four journalists who are facing a criminal defamation lawsuit from Spanish singer Julio Iglesias for reporting on serious allegations of public interest.
#España: Nos solidarizamos con los y las periodistas de elDiario.es ante la querella presentada por Julio Iglesias. El uso de demandas penales para intimidar a periodistas constituye un ataque al derecho del público a la información. @europeanjournalists.org
#Azerbaijan: A court handed down prison sentences of up to 15 years to journalists and media actors associated with the independent news outlet Toplum TV. Together with the @europeanjournalists.org, we condemn these sentences and demand their immediate release.
#HongKong: We have expressed serious concern over the dismissal of five journalists at the BBC's Hong Kong bureau following years of alleged bullying and reports of pressure on staff over their participation in the Hong Kong Journalists Association. @ifjasiapacific.bsky.social
#UK: Journalists are self-censoring their coverage of anti-immigration protests, the Trump administration and trans issues due to safety concerns. Harassment of journalists for reporting on matters of public interest cannot be normalised.
#Türkiye: On 23 July, our affiliate @diskbasinis.org announced its submission of a draft bill to political parties to protect the rights of freelance journalists and media workers. We welcome a well-needed initiative. Freelancers deserve strong protection!
#USA: [UPDATE 24.07.2026] Good news! The Department of Justice has withdrawn subpoenas attempting to compel testimony from @nytimes reporters. While we welcome this decision, we reiterate that the subpoenas should never have been issued in the first place. @newsguild.org
#India: Good news! Irfan Mehraj, a journalist who has been imprisoned since March 2023, was released on bail on 22 July. However, his trial is ongoing. The criminalisation and judicial harassment of journalists must stop. @ifjasiapacific.bsky.social
#UK: Good news for press freedom ✊🏿 The Investigatory Powers Tribunal found that former BBC journalist Vincent Kearney had been subject to unlawful surveillance. The tribunal ordered the Police Service of Northern Ireland and the MI5 to pay £10,000 each in damages. @nujofficial.bsky.social

"This is a landmark judgement by the IPT, and is a clear and unambiguous vindication of our member Vincent Kearney and the BBC," said Séamus Dooley, NUJ assistant general secretary. www.nuj.org.uk/resource/nuj...
#Mexico: Awful news 🔴 We condemn the murder of journalist Francisco Alejandro Leyva Aguila by an armed group in Oaxaca. This is the fourth killing of a media worker in the last two months, and the seventh this year. The authorities must take action. @fipamericalatina.bsky.social
#Zambia: Journalist Macpherson Mukuka was arrested by the police and accused of 'publishing and secretly recording' an audio conversation that the authorities deemed to be in violation of the Cyber Crimes Act. 📣 We call for his immediate release!
#Palestine: Two Haaretz journalists were prevented from reaching the home of a Palestinian family under siege by Israeli settlers in the West Bank by the border police and settlers. This is yet another attempt to silence the truth by preventing reporting.
#Türkiye: Good news! DW correspondent Alican Uludağ was released under judicial supervision on 22 July having spent one day in detention. Journalists cannot be silenced by intimidation and judicial harassment. Journalism is NOT a crime.
#Georgia: We strongly condemn the sentencing on 22 July of journalist Vakho Sanaia to 14 days in detention for a Facebook post. Free Vakho immediately. This crackdown on press freedom and freedom of expression must stop.
