Wisconsin polls are a nightmare. The chaos in the race has meant unusually high percentages of undecided voters - particularly among groups (like older voters) who are highly likely to vote next week. Hong is the favorite, but after last night no one should be surprised by huge day-of swings.

Bah. PRIMARY, not primarily.

The big fear here is that the polls may not have been that far off among *decided* voters, but that among persuadable/undecided voters (who will be THE group that decides the general) broke late for Stevens by a staggering margin. Alarm bells are absolutely warranted no matter what.

It also illustrates that spending lots of money works in this electorate. The GOP will absolutely unleash hell - and infinite negative ad buys - now and there needs to be a better response than “it’s part of our story that we faced less money in the primary and still eked out a win”.

AES was expected to win the primarily easily and by at LEAST 10 points. Instead, he’s been losing ground all night and while he’s still in the lead, it looks like he might win by 1 point or less. Given that he has trailed in GE head to heads, the idea that he may be WAY behind is a legit concern.

Pretty massive miss from polls, mainly. At 8:00 PM, folks on his side were already celebrating. Then things tightened a LOT. He’s probably going to win, but the “progressive mandate” narrative is badly weakened. Expect panic about the general now.

Oh, and none of this matters much at all since there’s no coherent way for any of this to make financial sense any time soon. We’re several hundred billion dollars shy of the annual profits they’d need to be making just to service the debt they’ve taken on already.

Very few are optimistic that it would be useful in the hands of junior (or even mid-level) staff in most cases.

My evidence for this is direct observation of 100s of engineers in recent years, but also from the testimony of the handful of preternaturally talented engineers I’ve come to know over decades. Most found AI curious, but not good enough for a long time. Now, all of them use it in disciplined ways.

Forcing everyone to use them is like forcing every driver to try and commute in an unwieldy supercar with no a/c and half an inch of ground clearance. It looks cool initially, but good luck navigating any speed bumps you encounter.

…for everyone else? It usually slows them down. Makes their work more prone to confusion and errors. Introduces risks they are ABSOLUTELY not prepared to address when they break open in production. These tools are powerful and useful, but only for a very limited set of users.
