“Eddington” is the most under-appreciated film in recent memory.

Hassett: "Data centers are very good for towns bc they create so many jobs & bring people in with high incomes that can buy houses & stuff like that. So if you take a sleepy town that hasn't seen much in the last 30 years & put a data center there, there are gonna be a bunch of happy residents."

Update: Google just sent me a statement saying it is “rolling back” this AI feature that let anyone make completely bullshit satellite images. Comes after our demos of the tool and those from OSINT researchers. One of the worst AI tools I’ve ever seen bsky.app/profile/jose...

At this point, the only streaming service I can wholeheartedly endorse is the Criterion Channel.

Amazon Prime are cutting scenes from films they stream; another reason to get your hands on Second Sight's lush 4K UHD version of The Name of the Rose. Umberto Eco's whodunnit gets a literate treatment here; it's all about censorship... Out Aug 10, 2026. 5 out of 5 film-authority.com/2026/07/31/t...

I used to do some work on the ethical use of satellite and drone imagery for aid and disaster response, and it is genuinely hard to express in words what a dangerous, stupid thing Google is doing by making it easy to use GenAI to create faked satellite imagery:

Microsoft-owned LinkedIn just added a “seems like AI slop” button to report posts that don’t feel human-written. It’s part of a broader push to get rid of AI slop on LinkedIn www.theverge.com/ai-artificia...

I’m old enough to remember the GOP-crafted STAPLE (Stopping Trained in America Ph.D.s From Leaving the Economy) Act - so named because it proposed “stapling” a green card to a PhD automatically to encourage highly educated foreign students to stay here. We’re a million miles from that today.

Stuff like “Negative Burn” really appealed to me as a kid because you’d get such a wide variety of offerings in each issue. This @zandercannon.bsky.social one-pager blew my mind as a kid because I couldn’t settle on how to interpret the message. Is it a symbol of hubris? Of hope? Of life itself?

That's quite enough beloved musicians dying suddenly.

To be fair, if I had access to a genie I *would* make a wish that Sam Altman is uniquely capable of granting.

Dare Obasanjo

“What we need to explain to the world: Number one, we are close to creating a genie that can grant any wish. Number two, we are going to make sure that our first wishes broadly benefit humanity” - Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI — This is definitely the opposite of Anthropic’s AI kills all jobs pitch.

My new pet conspiracy theory is that all of the old industry events like E3 were either ruined or cancelled because execs realized that locking themselves in a large building with thousands of devs for a week was probably going to result in more atomic wedgies than they were comfortable enduring.

We must preserve the history and advocate for the culture of Shitty MSPaint Memes. The internet was built on the backs of slapped-together edits with impact font labels that looked so amateurish that you knew they could only be hand made. To defeat AI, we must embrace the janky, pixelated past.

While troubleshooting a hardware issue, I inadvertently turned off Bluetooth on my desktop and then... shit. All input devices - being Bluetooth-connected - ceased to function. Manually rebooting doesn't turn Bluetooth back on. Checkmate. Until I found a box with a shitty old USB keyboard in it.

I am pleased to report that introducing HeroQuest to ten year olds continues to be an absolute home run of a way to spend an afternoon (and evening and night).

At long last, 60 Minutes has found the “Zero Charisma Andy Rooney” foretold in legends.

Oliver Darcy

Scoop: I’m told that Ross Douthat is exiting The NYT and is expected to take a role at “60 Minutes.” News expected to be announced soon.
