If you're thinking of Bernstein, his criticism-of-the-critics also suffers from ignoring that Wurman's sharpest critic (1) is an originalist who's repeatedly published with a prominent conservative, and (2) is claiming dishonesty based on specific, and yes "obvious," misrepresentations of sources.

Note: I'm not qualified to weigh in on history that Anthony, Ilan, and others have been debating, but I am qualified to read a legal treatise, and Wurman's persistent misrepresentation of Henry St. George Tucker's discussion of birthright citizenship, which Justice Thomas adopted, is depressing.

FWIW, Wurman relies elsewhere on Magna Carta to make his argument. He cites it 4 times in his law review article, it appears in his congressional testimony and popular press pieces, and it was in his amicus brief:

I very much appreciate this response, but I'm most interested in the impact on formative assessment assignments, not exams. The case I've seen made for asynchronous classes in past is that they involve a lot of formative assessment outside exam environment, but that seems threatened by AI.

To be clear, my interest in limiting laptop use long predates AI, and I think getting distracted by other things on the Internet / messaging apps is the far bigger problem. But I do think AI is another way for students to disengage and compounds the problem.

On that point, are you aware of any school that has found a way to operationlize effective internet blocking in classrooms that can be turned on and off (as some faculty will want to block and others will want their students to have access to the internet for classwork, at least at times)?
