I made the trek to the Braintree MA Sears today out of curiosity. It's not as empty as the one in the video below. Offerings are limited, but not post-apocalyptic. Only clothes and appliances upstairs. I guess they had some luggage and mattresses on display too. And a couple gas grills. 1/4

So freakin' obnoxious. I didn't love all of it. The auto center 'lifetime' warranties had so many asterisks on them. BUT imagine how strong a competitor they would have been to Amazon. They had the logistics in place.

It's weird how far and quickly they fell. Because they sell / sold tools and appliances and did car repair in addition to other department store stuff, they seem much more useful than a Target or a Walmart. Tho I guess some Walmarts sell tires and stuff.

I wonder what's keeping this store open? I was in there for about a half hour and I seemed to be the only person buying anything. $22.00 for a tee shirt and shorts. I checked the price for the brand and they are twice that on Amazon. They did have a ton of appliances, so maybe they live off that?

The neighbor kids and I lived for the Christmas catalogue. Their dad worked at the Sears auto center, so every appliance they had was a Kenmore. It messed with my brain b/c the dad's first name was Ken. 😀

I guess what struck me most is that while everything is pleasant, there's a home made quality to it. Nicely executed but just a touch off design wise. Like if a mom and pop appliance store put a lot of effort into getting signage printed at Staples. Or like a made up store in a movie. Or in a dream.

Like in the video, it was strangely quiet. The rest of the giant mall also seems to by struggling, but the Sears was the most quiet of all the stores.

Upstairs is a normal department store. Downstairs is a nice retail space but filled with boxed appliances like a warehouse. Though clean and neat. One young man was sitting quietly at a register. People were passing through, but not much purchasing. I bought shorts and a tee shirt for cheap!
