Have you heard of Natively? You can look up novels and manga for various levels of difficulty to find ones that would work for you. There's also a forum but you don't need to use it to find good books. Did I mention it's entirely free? learnnatively.com

You'll improve if you practice and study through reading, writing, speaking, and listening. You should train all four skills if you want to be fluent. However, if you find that demotivating, then focus on the things that keep you motivated.

I'm that case, I recommend finding things that work for you. People have lots of good suggestions but the "best" resource or study method is the one that works for you. It helps to experiment with different apps or techniques to find that.

The best way to learn is to start with the alphabet (hiragana and katakana), then start bulking vocab, and grammar. Practice through reading, writing, speaking, and listening. If you struggle with self-discipline then get a teacher to help you.

We still need good translators! Especially once the AI bubble bursts. Finding good translators is getting increasingly difficult because so many people either don't enter the industry or don't improve because they're relying on slop.

Modern light novels are written by more amateur writers and don't have editors looking over them the same way as traditionally published novels. This can mean the overall language used in light novels is relatively simple, even if they use advanced vocab/kanji.
