Here's the thing, right - it was hyped up to be this massive gathering, a huge event, and rumours of crowds being bussed in. But it was so. Small. There really weren't that many of them, and we outnumbered them quite substantially. All in all, it was just your average fash get-together.

I always remember this anime mainly because the song they used for the AS promo was cool as hell.

Pokemon as an example of how accepted anime was is also weird because A.) The localization goes super out of it's way to make itself look not Japanese, and B.) The anime didn't even start airing over here until 98.

I didn't ever do cons and a big part of that was every description of con culture included something that sounded like you just kind of got assualted and have to deal with it.

I'm too young to remember the 90's, but my experience in the 2000's was that unless you had a friend group to talk about anime with, you kept your mouth shut because you would either get insta bullied or hear some crazy racist shit. I'm gonna guess turning back a decade doesn't make it better.
