Would have been so simple. And so inexpensive. And it would have kept the Expos alive, no question. Even now, the money they've squandered on the roof plus the further expenditure to refurbish would have built a dual-purpose football/soccerstadium and a modest 40,000-seat ballpark. Such a waste.

When the place was full, it was great. Even half full. Covered way too many games, though, when the crowd was under 10,000 and all you could hear was the noise of people banging those empty seats.

It was always better without the roof. Doubleheaders and you could lug your own six-packs into the stadium. We would build pyramids of empties against the plexiglass in the outfield. Dunno why they let that go on - my late brother-in-law once drank 18 beers at a doubleheader and drove home.

Montreal's other facilities have remained in use more than those of almost any other Olympic host - the Claude Robillard in particular. Had they not gone hog-wild with the stadium, Montreal would have been one of the most successful Games ever. And they're still making the same mistake.

It's uncanny. Some guy in my email ripped me for the column and accused me of being old. I am old – but that just means I've been watching this crap in awe for more than 50 years. He said the Big Pile will now be in use for another 50 years. I defied him to answer the question: For what?
