A database of interviews with the Zelda team. Our goal is to preserve that legacy, share it here, and build a safe community for our followers! By @maxnichols.bsky.social www.hyruleinterviews.com

Yep! this part if the interview was talking about climbing mechanics. I’m not 100% sure why he specifically drew a comparison to Trico (and not, say, SOTC’s climbing mechanic)

Thank you!

When he says “we are friends with…” I don’t know who “we” refers to. it’s double translated because this was a french interview, so we may be getting into odd games of telephone here.

Of course, I never would have guessed that "whatever they feel like" for Miyamoto would be films and museums and theme parks

To be fair to Miyamoto here, at least, he has definitely reached the "older folks go off and do whatever they feel like" stage, hahah. It's been 11 years now since he left his role as the head of all software development.

I don’t think we can attribute the Wii U tablet to Reggie — hardware development happened at NCL, unless I’m missing something.

The biggest gap here is the lack of Japanese influences. There is a 0% chance that Miyamoto went through his early life without getting heavily influenced by, ya know, his OWN culture, but I just lack much explicit evidence pointing to anything specific. Other than Alakazam the Great.

Yeah it looks like I'll need to add a whole new major tree here for Conan and the influences on Conan. That'll be a fun.

000

I see what you did there

000

If it was concrete, like a script or a draft of a novel, I'd include it even if nobody except Lucas himself ever saw it. But yeah if it's just concept scribbles and notes that doesn't meet the bar. Thanks, I'm taking it out of v2!

000

If you have suggestions I'd definitely be interested in hearing them!

That's fair! I don't want to spread misinfo. I unfortunately don't have a lot of info about what influenced Moon Patrol; shmup history isn't my area of expertise. The wikipedia page claims that it was the first game to introduce parallax scrolling, but there isn't a clear source for that claim.

It's a little bit unclear to me how concrete of a thing Indiana Smith was. If it was just like, an outline, I proooobably shouldn't include it in here.

Ah whoops, put the wrong color on that one! Shoulda been green. Thank you! Yeah, it's true that it wasn't published. It's kinda similar to some of the Tolkien works I have listed, which didn't get published on their own, only compiled much later into books like Lost Tales and Silmarillion.

I'd love to find evidence of a more concrete connection bridging that gap, ie the fantasy lit that Miyamoto and Tezuka read as kids (if there is any), that sort of thing.

Good question! I have Christianity in there but distantly, as an influence on Tolkien. My stance is that the Christian imagery in Zelda 1 exists mostly because that was part of the common imagery of pastoral/medieval fantasy genre. But it's true I don't have that represented very strongly here.

120

Thank you! I'll note that down for my next update

Hahah, that’s fine! You’re right that I didn’t put in any of moon patrol’s influences. Kind of arbitrarily. The reason Moon Patrol itself is there is because it was the same creator as Kung Fu Master, and helped build up the screen scrolling technology that is the reason Kung Fu influenced on Mario
