Wilson was well known at City Hall before running for office. Her effective work on Jumpstart, transit, and minimum wage (outside of Seattle, but still) was key to her viability as a candidate. She’s not a charming hot boy, but that’s it.

She's not perfect, but legacy media and centrist electeds have practically made a sport of trying to discredit anything she does (see: school meals fiasco). That's undeniable, and it's no more productive than her own staffing gaffes.

Barnes himself described his relationship with Wilson as tenuous. I don't think he had a long leash. I also think that whether she'd let him go at the beginning of her term or now would've generated the same political response from her opponents.

But letting it drag out in radio silence while others pile on to play politics is inviting controversy.

This should be fairly cut and dried. That a police chief should establish primary residency in the city they serve, be in town for major city events, and not be physically aggressive to journalists asking basic questions about their whereabouts, is not particularly controversial.

Staff issues do seem to be a glaring problem for her administration so far.

I do not disagree. She should not assume or expect her opponents to work in good faith.
