I post this essay too often, maybe, but that’s only because it contains the single best sentence I’ve ever written. On my favorite version of the Odyssey:

Thomas

“Ultimately, Magic Mike XXL isn’t a hero’s journey, because it doesn’t believe in heroes... Instead of heroes, sexy dancing. Instead of telling the story of why the king is the king, sexy dancing” How have we had weeks of Odyssey discourse without citing this @hellafitzgerald.bsky.social banger?

different specifics in my own version of this but they come out to the same thing: my sentences are only gonna get longer and weirder and there’s not a thing you can do about it. if the long sentence has one defender, it’s me; if the long sentence has no defenders, I have passed from this earth

Marie Le Conte

motherfucker I am French and I mostly read 20th century European fiction; my sentences are going to keep running on and on and on and there's nothing any of you or indeed any of us can do about it

Almost a year later, we've been able to make up over half of this loss — thanks *entirely* to new subscriptions 🙏— but we still need some help to make up the rest. All it takes to support BWDR is a $29 annual subscription, and in exchange you get full access to everything we've published since 2013!

Bright Wall/Dark Room

Real talk (reel talk?): BWDR recently lost a partnership that covered nearly half our operating budget, so things are suddenly very tough. If what we do has ever meant something to you, or you’ve ever thought about subscribing, now’s the time—it *truly* makes a difference.

I went to see the restoration of The Piano at Lincoln Center on Friday (unbelievably beautiful, even better and weirder and freakier than I remembered) and I kept thinking of this quote the whole time. what a loss, what a legend

Real actors - the ones I like to watch & work with anyway - are like this. They want a good part & to make some money, sure. But even if you get to hold up the scenery in something truly great once or twice in a lifetime, you rest easier.

the last version of this was the best anyone looked on camera consistently over one ten year period, which is a harder question. the single best anyone’s ever looked on camera is a much easier question to answer: Sam Shepard in Days of Heaven

Dawn

there is a recurring prompt around what’s the best that anyone has ever looked on camera and I never have an answer but I’m watching right now and I think it’s gotta be George Clooney in Ocean’s 11

reposting this an additional time bc I feel so strongly about it, Women and Other Monsters is a spectacular book and the best thing that could possibly come out of this little cultural moment around Greek mythology would be for it to become the phenomenon it’s always deserved to be

I can’t believe it took me this long into the Odyssey discourse to think to post this but… if you loved the Sirens and Scylla and Charybdis and you also love stuff Elon Musk would consider too woke, have I got a book for you

Women and Other Monsters by Jess Zimmerman: 9780807055540 | PenguinRandomHouse.com: BooksA fresh cultural analysis of female monsters from Greek mythology, and an invitation for all women to reclaim these stories as inspiration for a more wild, more “monstrous” version of feminism...www.penguinrandomhouse.com
