Random encounters fucking suck ass and I never want to go back. I'm playing DQ7 now and love how I can see enemies on my map, avoid, or simply whack some of them away if I'm high enough of a level.

Because the original game is actually good and not padded the F out with unnecessary shit. Also it did a better job conveying a sense of mystery.

The HD2D remakes have also been very good across the board.

For me, the gold standard for Remakes will always be the Resident Evil games. Those games were always intended to be survival horror in the purest form, and you couldn't do that back in 1997. You couldn't walk/run or shoot at the same time!!!! Plus, you can elevate the horror elements now.

Yeah but now they're realizing FF7 already told a pretty complete story and jamming in 800 zillion tedious minigames and filler to pad out the runtime ain't a good addition FF6 has way more potential for expansion I think.

I remember going back and firing up the original FF7 after a few years and saying "Jesus Christ, this combat is slower than molasses." Thank god for 3x battle speed options on the ports.

In the cases of Dragon Quest and Persona, they basically refreshed the battle system, sped up movement and action, put a new coat of paint on the environments, and added fresh Voice Acting. That goes a long way, for me. You don't realize how slow PS1-PS2 games were until you try to go back lol

I don't think we need large scale remakes like this. I can't even begin to wrap my head around how big those games would need to be. Dragon Quest has done a great job modernizing the older games for a new audience. Do that. Or do it like Persona 3 and 4. Refresh the game.
