E.F. Schumacher differentiated between 'convergent problems' where solutions converge to identical perfection (e.g. Formula 1 cars), and 'divergent problems' that do not have identikit solutions but must instead be "transcended". Climate change seems to be a divergent problem. We need a new story.

Maybe its supported by the worship of quantification (because of its success in the hard sciences) and the exclusion of non-quantifiable and non-material qualities and values? Most likely its a combination of all these and more. But the core problem is not informational or technological.

Yes - but its more than ads. Its the cultural story of tech-enabled progress that seems to be encountering diminishing marginal returns. Perhaps its an evolutionary-derived primate desire for status, currently expressed (and encouraged to be) through money and consumption?
