Anyway halfway through I was just wishing I was watching The Green Knight (2021) instead. That's a movie that really made the world feel big and scary and magical. and it didn't Spell It Out all the time, ugh.

Apparently some people took issue with the non linear story but like hello? Have you ever watched a movie, or read a book? I thought it was a good choice and that they could have leaned into it even more, lean into the story being the confused recollections of a war weary, magic addled man

Most of all, how tf do you have Odysseus doing a whole spiel about the horrors of war and his trials being an allegory of PTSD, immediately followed by him killing the suitors cage match style. What the fuck? That's just... Bad storytelling.

I don't just mean vibes and style in terms of outfits and set decor, though. I mean in atmosphere and scale and mystery. Maybe it felt too modern, too tooled towards modern sensibilities and tastes. Too grounded in reality. It shoulda been way weirder. It's an Epic!!

Shout out to Agememnon's helmet though, that's the right direction. But Assasin's Creed still way outdid you bro.

Mainly: I was broadly entertained, but not awed, swept away, dazzled or enthralled. Call me shallow, but I think a legendary tale should have STYLE and VIBES. "Historical realism" is simply not for me.

I have thoughts about the Odyssey movie and they aren't really about the Odyssey per se. But FWIW, I don't really have a horse (heh) in this race, I'm a medieval / early modern girly.
