Man, current day romhackers and translators are putting out things I didn't even think were possible back in my day. Almost makes me want to go back and try to figure out that one PS1 game I wanted to do...

I think it was just a bug they didn't catch while working on the game. Apparently even modern rereleases still have that bug... and I couldn't verify it wasn't present in the NeoGeo CD release.

Oh and sorry for these rushed screenshots but this is what happens when you set the game to Spanish in console mode: The story is in Spanish, but the between stage cutscenes are in Portuguese. And there's no story in arcade mode other than near the end.

She might be, but I don't really remember seeing a lot of backstory material back then. There's probably more details in a Gamest Mook somewhere.

Fatal Fury always had strong soundtracks but I always felt that the music team for this game had a very specific plan from the start. The whole soundtrack, a mix of Jazz and latin themes, has motifs that repeat and keep building up until the final boss fight tune: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdZ_...

Another thing that you really need to consider about this game is that it was completely experimental. The art style, the gameplay, the characters, yes, you touch on all of that. But you didn't talk about the music itself. It's a complete departure from the norm. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeM4...

- if you select Spanish in the settings, the text is actually half Spanish and half Portuguese. And as far as I knew, the game is set in Mexico because Freia was on the run and escaped there. I always assumed they knew each other because their parents did business together at one point.

Kasumi Todoh actually doesn't speak English in the game. When you win a bout, she pulls out a phrase book and says "Come back when you grow up" in poorly spoken English. Also, SNK had been translating their Neo-Geo games to Spanish for several years by this point, and the translation is broken;
