When anyone can turn a pistol into a DIY machine gun, all our communities are at risk of mass devastation at any moment. We must keep the state legislative momentum going to stop these dangerous weapons because our lives and futures matter more than the gun industry’s bottom line.

Gun violence is the number one killer of our kids — with Black and brown communities paying the heaviest price. It shouldn’t be this way.

On Saturday, 12-year-old Jacob Freytes, also known as Kai to those close to him, was senselessly shot and killed by a stray bullet when a fight broke out in front of a bodega in his neighborhood in the Bronx. My heart is with Kai’s family, who now have to navigate a world without him.

In May, 15-year-old Da’Jon Hayes-Burr was injured after he defended a young girl from being assaulted. He was a community hero. On Saturday, Da’Jon was shot and killed a few weeks before the start of his sophomore year of high school.
