I routinely see kids products that come in the 2 options "Dinosaur" or "Unicorn"- which apart from the obvious, annoys me because one gets science and one gets mythology. This could easily be fixed by swapping dinosaurs with dragons, or, hear me out, aggressively marketing Cambrian sea life to girls

I feel like this is often the case, where governments effectively only fund art if it's nationalistic. IMO if a place has a thriving healthy art scene where people make what they want, styles and movements will emerge organically, that will simply become part of the cultural identity anyway

This is a cute initiative- and measurably good! How else do you find your friend at the station if not with a message saying "hey I'm at the big mosaic"

Like art that can be valued in a Guinness World Record style, "most lines in a drawing" metric achievement, which is ludicrous. I doubt people who view art this way go into bookshops and just say "give me the one that was hardest to write"

My other hot take is that valuing art on just effort and technical skill is designed to placate people who are skeptical about the value of art to begin with - and realism and detail happen to be the areas where those are demonstrated most clearly to the layperson and can be measured objectively

I always see nonpartisan, righteous anger at public art. Everyone loves to hate a concrete blob bought with taxpayer money, what's it even meant to be etc. My hot take: art funding is good and there's no benign policy for keeping out 'bad' art. You really just gotta fund it until a good one happens
