My other hot take is that valuing art on just effort and technical skill is designed to placate people who are skeptical about the value of art to begin with - and realism and detail happen to be the areas where those are demonstrated most clearly to the layperson and can be measured objectively

Like art that can be valued in a Guinness World Record style, "most lines in a drawing" metric achievement, which is ludicrous. I doubt people who view art this way go into bookshops and just say "give me the one that was hardest to write"

People *love* to measure things. I’ve been navigating Lego community circles for the last year with my son (watching a lot of creators and convention interviews). The most common questions are how long did this take you, and how many bricks did you use. The most boring questions ever.
