Schools need clarity and articles like this do them a disservice.

The article is not even about "AI" in any meaningful sense. Is about tech policy in schools, but splashes "AI" over the top to ride the hype wave. Even the paragraph that tries to explain how "AI" is different from other tools lists features that are true of ed tech in general. Messy hype-chasing.

It's wild to me how industry has convinced us that we need to fund training their future employees on their proprietary products, often funneling the money back to them. It's like they think education produces students as products, and industry is the consumer.

I'm thinking of meeting near the science center/NHM, them we could potentially visit after, since both are free for teachers (and science center free for everyone).

We're probably going to do a small get together this fall, as well as a bigger event with some other county branches to go up to Santa Barbara.

It was good to see people, but there wasn't a wide variety of talks, imo. A lot of focus on "AI". Some look at the new standards. The highlight for me in sessions was probably the e-textiles.

It helps solve the problem of ensuring that we prioritize protecting human rights rather than fantasizing about magical software.

Where we used to say, "It's buggy," people are now saying, "It's conscious." And they were trying to get HS CS teachers to have kids debate whether or not these programs are entitled to human rights. The world is upside down.

This is such a classic sentence pattern that I'm surprised it can get twisted so easily. The chatbot one that gets me is, "It's not just X, it's Y!" That one comes off like cheap marketing text to me. The "not only...but also..." just sounds like a general parallel construction.

Nevermind, found the article. A Michigan judge granted the family guardianship in violation of federal law in Dec 2016, and the girl was reunited with her mother in Feb 2017. I don't see how the foster family had standing to sue, but I don't know how Michigan does things. thehill.com/policy/inter...

I totally agree with you, and I think the biggest issue isn't even that is not true. It's that this ambiguity is a feature for boosters, that the term doesn't mean anything. They dodge criticism by creating strawmen and trying to get critics on the back foot rather than honestly evaluate impacts.
