Not only did this book win the award but the University of California Press, (formerly?) a renowned publisher when it comes to academic books related to Japan, continues to promote it despite being aware of the problems with it, which is not a great sign for the field or academia more broadly.

There should be a Comic-Con that's about comics.

Two days ago some comics studies people got mad at me for saying I knew which book had won in the academic category, with one even reporting me to Jackie Estrada for some reason, so it's darkly funny of Comic-Con to accidentally publish the entire list of winners right after that.

I'm always struck by how many in anglophone comics/manga studies seem to treat scholarship primarily as an expression of fandom, with no apparent curiosity about the medium and its history, content to forever recycle the same myths and tropes.

The percentage of Americans who are staring at their phones while driving is getting insane (roughly one in three whenever I'm crossing the street and count). Seems indicative of the deeper social rot in this country (though enabled in large part by Americans' preference for automatic transmission)

The right-wing mind is a wonder to behold. The book reviewed here is John Dower's War Without Mercy: Race and Power in the Pacific War, in which the author goes to great lengths detailing Japanese war crimes, but also quotes racist and exterminationist rhetoric by Americans.

Think of the money that this will save American police departments by replacing the outdated helicopter technology they are currently forced to use to terrorize communities of color and preventing their children from getting enough sleep
