you shouldn't be mad about destroying books. you should be mad about who is allowed to have access to the scans, and why the public isn't able to benefit from this at nominal fee to be paid directly to the author, rather than the knowledge being rented from a middleman.

there was a genuine opportunity to make the world's knowledge universally accessible and useful to the public, and compensate authors, but because Google Books wasn't deemed too big to fail, a settlement that AG and we reached wasn't allowed to come to fruition, yet Anthropic case did get approved

so now instead what we have is scanops for private rather than public benefit, with the authors getting a token one time lump sum, and the public not being able to actually get access to the scanned works except indirectly through renting models from frontier LLM providers and diluted weights.

When I worked at Barnes & Noble, the standard way for processing returns of mass market paperbacks was the strip the cover off (the bookland EAN bar code was inside the front cover) and throw out the rest of the book. I destroyed tens of thousands of books probably.

I literally worked on Google Books scanops SRE, ama the same guy who ran Google Books now has the equivalent job at Anthropic and I can promise you that all of us handled every library book with the utmost care, returning them with not even a single ripped page or ding. but destructive scanops...

literally these are books that would be pulped if not bought for 10 cents on the dollar. do rare books sometimes make it into there? yeah, if someone is careless, but that's *upstream* of what happens on sale, not *downstream*. you fundamentally are rescuing something from the fucking pulper.
