This wasn't originally intended to turn into a long fairly detailed thread about what being a "bestseller" actually means but it did.
Tom CoxChanged my bio here to "ex-bestselling author" as I'm a big pedant for factual accuracy.
Ex-bestselling author. If you want yet more up-to-the-minute news about how awful the world is delivered by yet another sanctimonious fake digital self wholly above moral approach I would strongly advise that you do not follow me. https://www.tom-cox.com

If Blackwells has to account for and pay HMRC on those foreign sales, they’re bloody well real!!!
Again, many apologies that I'm not sending these overseas, but I can't bring myself to charge people the astronomical Royal Mail international postage rates. Blackwell's will, however, magically, send you the book with ZERO international delivery charges: blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/pro...
If anyone else in the UK would like one of these books (happy to sign & personalise) for cover price £9.99 I just got some lovely Roscoe bookmarks from my mum, which you can have free. Drop me an email at hello@tom-cox.com with your address and I'll send payment info.
Only Me!@dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social So wonderful to get happiness through the post!!
I have bought more books by distinguished gents @benaaronovitch.bsky.social @rovelli.bsky.social @dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social and @thewritertype.bsky.social from the mighty @bookshop.org I really don't need more books but I absolutley need more books. Le haul:
Here’s the bit in the description that sold me: “If you passed them on a walk, you may not pay them much attention. Most likely you would see Carl’s long floppy ears, tail and fur and mistake him for a dog.”
Currently reading @dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social’s EverythingWill Swallow You. I bought the e-book to read immediately, then the audio book for a long drive, and now the paperback from Blackwell’s to give my wife. Previously, only Pynchon, and My Bloody Valentine got this treatment. It’s beautiful.
I think it best to see authorial success as akin to an elliptical route which, as a consequence of its own gravitational pull, brings the hope of renewed riches in a periodic cycle. At least, that’s how I convince myself - as a *niche* author - to keep going!
I love The Good, The Bad and The Furry, but it didn't have the same effect on me as your novels did. Finishing Everything Will Swallow You left me bereft. I'm soon going in for a reread.
That would have been pretty embarrassing at my school, I went to a convent
Sophia Petrillo Nun Gives Double Thumbs UpAlt: Sophia Petrillo Nun Gives Double Thumbs Upstatic.klipy.comSo, am I allowed to change mine to "potential bestselling author - even though I may have died before that happens"? 🙄
“What’s a beautiful girl like you doing in a dump like this,” I ask, motioning to the entire country
Not a humorous #thread, this one, but interesting nonetheless. I didn't know sales from independent bookshops don't count towards (meaningless) rankings.

I'm just finishing Ring the Hill (highly recommended, a marvellously weird and witchy ramble in the wilds of Derbyshire and Devon). Then it's EWSY, 1983 and Villager. Perfect for autumn.

Your Publishers are SO wrong. "NOT FOR FUCKWITS" will be making sales go through the roof.
You could tie them into the themes of the books. - Sucked into an interdimensional portal that was masquerading as a freestanding gate in a field nobody owned. - Eaten by painted cats that stepped out of their frames. - Turned into your own crocheted voodoo doll by a frustrated reviewer.
