To reiterate: WTF google?

Joseph Cox

New from 404 Media: Google Earth has introduced an AI feature that lets anyone fabricate completely bullshit satellite images. In our own tests, we added a “bomb blast and crater” to an area of Los Angeles. This is a misinformation time bomb, will 100% be abused www.404media.co/google-earth...

This is a GREAT paper.

In our paper (which yes was focused on things like GPR and drones but I see connections to the Google problem), we talked about pseudoarchaeological colonialism and I feel like that's relevant to Google's AI map project:

WTF google.

I used to do some work on the ethical use of satellite and drone imagery for aid and disaster response, and it is genuinely hard to express in words what a dangerous, stupid thing Google is doing by making it easy to use GenAI to create faked satellite imagery:

We went to Dodekalitten at Kragenæs on the way home today. Interesting place, but I'd like to go when it's less busy. IR Converted X-T2 with 760nm longpass filter. Hurriedly tweaked on my phone.

This is so cool, and another thing to add to things to think about with the inundated landscapes in the North Sea: we must presume sophisticated seafaring capabilities during the Mesolithic even though we lack direct evidence for them. >>

New paper: Mesolithic mariners in the Central Mediterranean made sustained, long distance sea journeys. Not accidents, one offs, and not rare events. See thread in the comments. academic.oup.com/pnasnexus/ar..., led by @jblinkhorn.bsky.social

I had a Fuji X-T2 body converted to full spectrum sensitivity. So far having a lot of fun experimenting with filtration and trying to decide what to use for an upcoming project- I really want to punch up the contrast between the little wetlands and the surrounding landscape

You suddenly get a narrator describing your life and there’s no way to turn it off - everyone can hear it. While shopping, at work, at home, with friends - the voice narrating your every move goes on. Who do you hope is the voice of this narrator?
