Once I entered my late teens, and particularly after escaping homophobic Jamaica for much more progressive Ithaca, New York, I had a clear sense of living a magical life, despite AIDS, the end of the Cold War, etc. I do look back gratefully at 1985 through 2000 as an amazing time to have been young.

For me, yes and no. As a child, I spent a lot of solo time in the company of people much older than me, so I was exposed to their interests. I would amuse myself by exploring generations of junk accumulated in a house that was over 100 years old. All contributed to a nostalgia for times past…

Private equity has been taking over HVAC, plumbing, electrical and veterinarian businesses all over the US. They buy small family owned businesses, use the local names and customer databases, but when you call half a dozen supposed competitors, you're actually dealing with the same company.

Funny how when someone is 18, being 23 years older makes you more than twice their age. But after knowing that person for almost 20 years, the difference in age does not feel so great anymore. I have watched my younger friends lose their hair, go grey, have kids. Quite something.

I hope this doesn't mean that I am making a slide into creepy old man territory. Two of my attractive, much younger (less so now that we've all aged), straight friends have been accusing me of being a creepy old man for decades.
