The solution to someone actively politicizing a neutral institution isn't to surrender or refuse to acknowledge it's happening; the solution is to beat them at it so badly that they stop trying.

Reading through this, it's not hard to immediately understand the appeal of Communism. Taking the Gentry's assets and holding them in common for the benefit of everyone sounds like a damn good idea when the Gentry is clearly engaged in politics to serve its own ends at the expense of everyone else.

This has always been the thing that gets me about Stancilism; it's a form of wonkism that is self-assuredly and incuriously dedicated to uselessness. A perennial argument you hear about Arizona and Phoenix in particular is that it's a terrible place for a city and, honestly, it's not; there's plenty of water. However, there isn't enough water to have a city *and* farmers growing millions of acres of alfalfa in the desert with free water.

Just had a fun moment looking up the etymology of "Weld" and discovering that it is *fucking ancient* Which is very weird when you're used to arc welding, but makes perfect sense when you're familiar with blacksmithing. The trip from the former part of my experience to the latter was wild.

Even after years of doing it, it still feels like a miracle that I can get a rambunctious child to fall asleep by singing to them for ten minutes. It also feels like a miracle that they also enjoy it and ask for it!

Once again, a huge chunk of Americans are both functionally innumerate and know next to nothing about the world beyond their *extremely* parochial daily lived experience.
