Note that I don’t have proof that retail and wholesale prices are so far out of step. But nobody is offering proof that Zohran Mamdani wants to sell $5 beef for $3.50 (a specific example that is given in the comments).

Ofc another question is: if retailers raise prices for a temporary shock, and wholesalers/producers raise prices to match post-shock, how do we realign the wholesale price with real input costs? But I reject the notion that this is impossible bc The Wisdom of Markets or some shit.

If there’s a supply shock that causes a temporary price hike, but then the prices never go back down after the input costs decline, why can’t nonprofits retailers step in to realign retail with wholesale prices?

The straightforward answer is you underprice the market to the extent that prices are inflated for profit rather than in response to real increases in input costs. Particularly useful when prices go up due to short term supply shocks and remain sticky once the supply shock is over.
