I knew that the sound design in this movie was great, but putting this piece together helped me realize that this really is a film that started with the sound and the rest followed from there. It's impressive work! I recommend watching it on your noise cancelling headphones in the dark at 3am.

friend, have i got news for you

quite annoying, because there are a lot of valid and interesting critiques in it, somehow she almost always defaults back to a kind of dismissal of the whole project of it, rather than examining *why* choices were made in good faith

i’m willing to grant her that it was just a poor attempt to say they have the narrative weight of tropes, and she’s not literally saying they’re all the best friend, but that’s still hilariously dismissive of a varied bunch of roles and performances

last thing i’ll say about Wilson’s Odyssey review is the meanness and snobbery would sit a lot better if she displayed even a fraction of the curiosity she’d no doubt admit is required to understand, say, Homer hell, her translation barely works without her 100-page introduction contextualizing it!

one of the most frustrating things about what Rowling has turned into is how hard it is to explain to offline people that she’s not just another author who has turned out to have shitty views - her entire life and fortune is dedicated to destroying trans people
