Writing style aside, this isn't broadly wrong? The types of JRPGs you were used to seeing through the PS2 era _were_ either largely gone or in scaled down experiences on portables. Trying to have JRPGs fit the console zeitgeist was pretty messy, resulting in games like aforementioned EoE and SO IV.

I never really want to play a normal belt scroller more than a single playthrough, so I don't know if it being a roguelike is going to fix this or make it unplayable for me.

I've never been totally sold on the analog for arrow inputs stuff in it, but always liked the simple up/down usage of it for the field style stages.

Any game that has proximity throws and a button priority that supercedes the button on throw should have something like this. I know AVG2 you can do this with lk+hp because all kicks always prioritize over punches.
