ABC told planners what to do, the planners did it well, and they changed their mind and used them for political bait. The Villages plan is in the approved Vancouver plan ffs! I hope Josh White and other senior leadership quit. This is why good planners no longer work in the City of Vancouver.

ABC Vancouver told reporters that the Villages plan was “disrespectful”, that city staff went too far, and that they were protecting residents from the sins of bureaucracy. But who told city staff to come up with a transformative plan? Here’s the receipts.

That mixed-use area that says non-residential first floor usage was only 1-2 blocks of high streets within each village though. If you compare to the deadzone that are the condos along the Cambie Corridor, this seems incredibly reasonable.

I don't think it's an ideological thing so much as just a rare thing. As I look across the spectrum and levels of government in Canada, charisma is in incredibly rare supply.

Of course, I'm also disappointed that Sean Orr, Pete Fry and Rebecca Bligh voted against the plan. This was the gentle density plan that NIMBYs said was preferable to towers and yet Vancouver can't even have this.

I really dislike that OneCity is leaning into the framing that upzoning "forces" anything to happen. Critique the Village Plan or the process, but nothing in the plan forced anyone to replace their home with a 6-storey mixed-use building. It merely permitted it, as Azaroff claims he wants to.

It's exactly this. Endorsing the use of "Indians" in 2026 is blatant racism but that's not the primary motivation here as they are fine with "indigenous" (arguably the more woke term). It's about denial of land claims and sovereignty. Which is still racism, to be clear.

this is entirely because findlay and her ilk don’t recognize or want to engage with first nations *as nations* who have legitimate land claims and the right to free, prior and informed consent on projects on their territories. that’s what this is about. www.biv.com/news/comment...
