@buddhaferret.bsky.social this is the point - the compromise couldn't work within the Republican party, why would it work anywhere else? Within the political system? Key thing to remember is that in America, the party election system is similar to that of the democracy at the top.
Looking back on this, it's an exercise in understanding why the compromises won't work. Note Republicans WERE the party of unions and progress once, but then once the laissez-faire element crept in so did all the prejudice. Eisenhower was one of the guys who tried the compromise. It failed.
