I admit there’s some basic logic in the idea that if you moderate your positions you can pull voters from the center and center right. *However* this has been tried a million times now and has been wildly unsuccessful in recent decades. And it does worse each time.

Among the worst ideas floating around is that "the free market" will naturally achieve desirable results for society. No, it won't, not even in theory, much less in practice. Markets don't optimize "good for society" unless you make them.
