Philadelphian, Chicagoan, Catholic lay minister • she | her “And having answered so I turn once more to those who sneer at this my city, and I give them back the sneer and say to them:”

Just read a transcript of a Fresh Air interview with the author of a book about the Catholic Church, and, man. It truly is remarkable just how low the bar can be for "accurate facts about the subject of your book."

Does the language of "non-negotiables" have a life in Catholic theology outside the context of US politics? BXVI used "These values are not negotiable" (Sacramentum Caritatis), which is connected but not identical.

I FULLY recognize that I am not a normal person; I am the outlier here—but one of the things I truly do not understand about gen AI use for writing is that I truly love re-reading something I have written, and I cannot imagine robbing myself of that pleasure.

I don’t want to do a whole “everyone process their feelings about covid on main” thing (it’s not healthy for me!), but the height of the pandemic was a time I was very conscious of distance from my able-to-work-remotely friends on the left.

I am a tax-and-spend liberal and I do not understand why I am paying federal taxes these days; taxes are not spoils through which our money gets redistributed to those who politically support Trump.

Murshed Zaheed

“Trump has rejected disaster aid for Democratic-run states at the highest rate in the 47-year history of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.” Right now people in blue states are basically paying federal taxes as if they’re colonized territories of red states. www.politico.com/news/2026/03...

I went off slightly in this week's bulletin reflection about "not counting women and children," but also, I didn't want to talk JUST about that and my word limit is 520, so... we'll see how what I did lands.

It’s me; I’m the niche. Me and my friend Mary, who met in a summer intensive Greek class almost 700 miles from Philadelphia and then learned that our fathers grew up one block apart.

There is a niche for whom this is the Platonic form of television, and I am the friendly Protestant but not Orange neighbor of that niche

I mean, yes, I want a big blockbuster Táin adaptation, but I don't want it to go through the choices of scriptwriters, directors, and editors; I want it to emerge fully-formed like Athena stepping from my wildest imagination and best dreams onto an IMAX screen.

This is the root of like 10-20 conversations each year in which a secular friend tells me I MUST watch (a tv show or movie), I in particular will LOVE it, and I have to explain to them that generally speaking, I just cannot watch media that tries to do anything with religion.

I have a personal belief that the more a person is a nerd for something: dinosaurs, The Odyssey, etc, the less likely they are to enjoy a popular entertainment version of that thing.
