It seems to me that if you remove someone from the voter rolls who previously signed up, the absolute minimum is that you have firm evidence that the person is indeed ineligible. Maybe they became ineligible due to a court verdict, or they died, or there's a later claim of non-citizenship.

Wow. This is getting pretty sketchy. The Alaska Division of elections used outdated data to justify removing a bunch of citizens from the voter roles and given the opportunity to fix it they were just, like, nope.

My favorite social construct for arguments about social constructs is money. I trot it out when someone uses social construct as the opposite of “something with real consequences for people’s lives”. Neurodevelopmental disorder is a social construct, along with crime or education level.

there are a lot of philosophical concepts that get egregiously misused out of the seminar room (and in the seminar room, to be fair). but in terms of sheer pernicious misuse "social construct" has gotta be top 5 somewhere and it's not number 5

I was coming along the hallway when I saw Rick take this great photo. This is a fire from June that kicked up again yesterday. Most think the season is essentially over, and the weather forecast has cool temperatures, but at the same time these things smolder a long time and can revive.

Alaska tundra (as opposed to boreal forest) area burned since 1950. In 2026 so far, only 286 acres (116 ha) of tundra has burned, the lowest since 1998. I had to get the MMR shot as a requirement for my Green Card b/c I’m old enough that I only had one childhood dose if measles vaccine. Also mumps back then was something only fine for boys, and I’ve had rubella, with an unknown titer status. Good thing I got that updated. Also TDAP every 10 years.

Last year before traveling I had my titers tested and learned I was low on rubella. So I got an MMR and didn't get autism (impossible) and didn't get rubella and thus didn't spread it to pregnant women who could suffer miscarriages, still births, or babies born with lifelong debilitating conditions.

The good news is, a scientific paper is inching towards publication. The bad news is that I'm again losing the data-as-singular-mass-noun fight. Clearly some people's agenda are different from mine and I don't have a sufficient number of stamina to fight them. (I'm the first author, dammit...)

Oh, Alaska. (It’s like if a garden path sentence and an attachment ambiguity had a baby. ) I don’t know that the troopers arrived intoxicated, but the writer wasn’t too steady in the saddle. Also it’s clearly possible for the cops not to kill dangerous idiots. Also, 5th degree misdemeanor?

Graphs showing cumulative area burned and carbon emissions in Ontario. Note in terms of area burned 2021 is the top spot but 2026 is top spot in terms of carbon emissions. Both are correct. The reason for this is that the 2026 fires are more severe - consumed more biomass (greater depth of burn).
