The governor will probably veto the bill, and it’s unclear if the GOP can override the veto. Other recent bills have given Newby power to directly appoint judges and targeted two individual judges for removal. I literally cannot keep up with all this.

They weaponized judicial ethics enforcement. But it wasn’t enough for Newby and his pals in the legislature. If this bill becomes law, they need the commission to recommend removal. Newby and his fellow justices can just remove any judge they want.

Chief Justice Paul Newby pushed for an ethics investigation into Democratic Justice Anita Earls in 2023, just for discussing bias and a lack of diversity within the state Supreme Court. From chapter 19 in my new biography of Earls:
