Quite right. 'Typo' is the wrong term for something that happened in late 1970s. It may even be that the translator was actually handwriting and that it was then typed up, with o mistaken for a. It would be interesting to know, but suspect we never will.

So it does look like the translators of the Oxford edition sort of plagiarized the 1980 translator and left the Penguin p.55 typo in by mistake, and neither publishing house noticed. It would be quite fun to write jointly to the LRB with reference to the 2024 article and point that out.

It wasn't a choice of GP by race. Just a choice of named GPs and their availability (I know them all so no doubt on their ethnicity). And yes, it was supposed to be light-hearted.
