I'd still rather provide free text, I don't mind having to roll my eyes at a few transphobic comments if it means we give others an opportunity to feel included (and it can show if our options are insufficient) It's real harm though, that I'm not sure researchers consider

It's such a shame too, because we provide the free text box for the people who don't fit into the categories we provide

Partly for the sake of minimising harm on trans respondents, partly because I'm not confident it'd produce better quality data as a separate Q But also to reduce the amount of transphobic free text responses I have to read during data cleaning

Also, I sent your post to our survey redesign team, along with advice that our gender question is good enough We'd been taking advice on adding birth sex, but I don't think we'll go ahead I've also suggested we keep transgender as a checkbox in the gender question, rather than a separate Q...

Honestly, congratulations. I'm sure it's bitter-sweet that it took a decade to be listened to, but if you're the reason that researchers end up doing less harm to trans people than they otherwise would have, that's one hell of an achievement I'm just sorry it comes at such a cost to you

Also it's deeply fucking irritating and at times anxiety inducing when I have to fill in shittily designed questions about my sex and gender in contexts where it's irrelevant

Which is crazy, because I'd wager that the majority of people doing science are first and foremost interested in estimates and how to interpret them

Or in modern terms...

I blame Neyman and Pearson for getting us into this situation, but there's no going back from giving a default - see the wiki: Fisher emphasizes that while ... 5%, 2%, and 1% are convenient, the exact p-value can be used, and the strength of evidence can ... be revised with further experimentation

Depending on the package you're using to make tables with, you could see if it has a setting for alignment Alternatively, could you include LaTeX styling in the document header to specify table alignment? (idk how to do that, I'd probably ask an LLM)

I think this is where I first heard about 'the man'

"other plausible values" is the gist I try to get across for people who aren't going to remember/understand technical explanations of things like error bars or confidence intervals this does usually sit atop a brief explanation of estimation though

Yikers, I hope we're past those kinds of comments now!

Slightly related, but I've submitted a poster abstract to the ADSN conference If successful, I'm intending handwrite/draw the poster at the conference Absolutely not interested in the printing faff and it's much easier to transport my ideas rather than a large poster

It's laden! The dream!!

020

So bummed I missed it, silly work meetings :'(

Aha that's at least better than what I assumed!

010

So really it's "what do Americans think the quality of life is in other countries" ?
