It is a particular disease of political conservatives that they have to relearn things from first principles and personal experience rather that the lessons of people who came before. It is gobsmackingly stupid.

Earlier losses came from leaders too "weak" to do that. It was a very stupid theory. But they espoused it a lot, really seem to believe it, and acted on it.
