By 1968, LaFayette was appointed national coordinator for MLK’s Poor People’s Campaign. He was present at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis on April 4, 1968, when MLK was assassinated. In his final directive to LaFayette, MLK told him to institutionalize and internationalize the nonviolence movement. /9

Recognizing LaFayette’s logistical genius, MLK appointed him as the national program administrator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1967. LaFayette organized working-class residents around housing discrimination and tenants’ rights during the Chicago Open Housing Movement. /8

LaFayette quietly built a sustainable infrastructure for local leadership. His bravery was tested on June 12, 1963 — the night Medgar Evers was assassinated — when he was brutally beaten outside his home. He went to work the next day wearing his bloodied clothes to show his lack of fear. /7

In 1962, LaFayette became the director of SNCC’s Alabama Voter Registration Project. In early 1963, he and his wife, fellow activist Colia Liddell, moved to Selma, Ala. — a territory considered by many in the movement to be too hostile and dangerous for effective organizing. /6

LaFayette continued the ride into Jackson, Miss., where he was arrested for protesting segregated interstate transit. He spent more than a month imprisoned in the notorious Mississippi State Penitentiary (Parchman Farm). Undeterred, he chose to leave college to dedicate himself to activism. /5

In 1961, when the initial Freedom Rides organized by the Congress of Racial Equality were halted by brutal white mob violence, LaFayette and his Nashville peers refused to let the campaign die. They picked up the mantle, traveling into Montgomery, Ala., where they were met with severe beatings. /4

LaFayette became a core leader of the Nashville Student Movement. He organized and participated in the historic 1960 lunch counter sit-ins that successfully desegregated downtown Nashville businesses. In the spring of 1960, he also helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. /3

In 1958, LaFayette moved to Nashville, Tenn., to attend the American Baptist Theological Seminary. It was here that he began attending nonviolence workshops led by James Lawson, who had spent three years as a missionary in India, studying Mahatma Gandhi’s nonviolent resistance strategies. /2
