#ResistanceRoots Bernard LaFayette Jr. was born on this day in 1940 in Tampa, Fla. He was a minister, civil rights activist and strategist whose commitment to nonviolence helped shape the Civil Rights Movement. Later in life, he became a globally recognized authority on conflict reconciliation. /1

In 1958, LaFayette moved to Nashville, Tenn., to attend the American Baptist Theological Seminary. It was here that he began attending nonviolence workshops led by James Lawson, who had spent three years as a missionary in India, studying Mahatma Gandhi’s nonviolent resistance strategies. /2

LaFayette became a core leader of the Nashville Student Movement. He organized and participated in the historic 1960 lunch counter sit-ins that successfully desegregated downtown Nashville businesses. In the spring of 1960, he also helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. /3

In 1961, when the initial Freedom Rides organized by the Congress of Racial Equality were halted by brutal white mob violence, LaFayette and his Nashville peers refused to let the campaign die. They picked up the mantle, traveling into Montgomery, Ala., where they were met with severe beatings. /4
