Interesting choice to lead w/ “a sharply divided public” & CM O’Keefe’s statement that the plan is “madness.” I say this as a resident of D5, a senior citizen, someone who bikes to combat climate change, & as a customer of the businesses on Hopkins. CM O’Keefe DOES NOT represent my views. At all.

The Berkeley Scanner

Despite a sharply divided public, Berkeley has approved protected bike lanes on Hopkins Street. CM Shoshana O'Keefe (who reps the district) called it "absolute madness." "This is about more than just a bike lane," countered CM Mark Humbert.

Me, hopefully in the near future, when I forget a bottle opener while visiting my favorite Berkeley shops on Hopkins.

TFW your city council rep, an "avid cyclist," fails to stop the approval to build protected bike lanes by a vote of 7-2. A majority of Berkeley residents want safer streets, sidewalks, & bike lanes. Kudos to the mayor, members of council & everyone in the community who made this happen. 💪🏻

TFW you read an email from your city council member that ticks all the WRONG boxes. Rose & Ada Streets as viable bike routes - no Loss of parking hurts businesses - no A car is needed to shop on Hopkins - no No need to reduce VMT - ah, NO It’s clear my council member does not represent my views.

Without incentives, drivers won't follow the traffic regulations, obey the speed limit, etc. So if we’re not going to do any enforcement, then the remaining incentive is: To keep your driving privileges, you must successfully demonstrate knowledge, risk management, & skills on a regular basis.

💯 Pilots working for air carriers must demonstrate proficiency every 6 months. General Aviation pilots at least every 2 years (24 calendar months). Drivers ... 🤷🏻‍♂️

David Ho

I biked and drove yesterday, and I’m more convinced than ever that driver’s licenses should be renewed annually with a driving test.

The flashing yellow lights, Virginia at MLK in Berkeley, not working working today. Here’s a photo from over a month ago. They weren’t working then either. Why haven’t they been fixed? Asking for a friend. @berkeleyca.gov

Could it be that Berkeley’s newly opened ped/bike crossing design, Adeline at Woolsey, is not working as planned? Cars are not supposed to turn left onto Woolsey, but crossing those double yellow lines painted on the pavement is apparently just too hard to resist. @cityofberkley.bsky.social

Do you suffer from guilt & anxiety about climate change? Ask your doctor about Damitol. Just one daily dose of Damitol & you can ignore your carbon footprint, drive a giant SUV, eat meat, & fly on an airliner whenever & wherever you want. With Damitol, climate change is somebody else's problem.

Vacationing is something most every developed nation supports, save the US. Number of vacation days/year required by law: France: 30 UK: 28 Sweden: 25 US: 0 France also has the right to disconnect (la loi de la déconnexion) to restore a boundary between work life & personal life.

So if I understand Speaker Scalise correctly, I should be able to show a photo ID to board a plane where I can then vote and also get all the pasta I can eat, and he’ll throw in some word salad at no additional charge? Talk about American Exceptionalism!

Aaron Rupar

Scalise: "For God's sake -- you can't get pasta at Olive Garden without a picture ID! Why not be able to show a picture ID to vote?"

3 years ago I cycled Rumrill Blvd in San Pablo to collect 3D video for Google StreetView. I still ride this route 1x/month, returning from Pt Pinol Park. Nasty flat today & the bike lanes are filthy. Saw other cyclists riding on the sidewalk! It’s one thing to build infra, another to maintain it.

“… unrealistic assessments of our own capabilities set us up for failure when the problems of being old-old catch up with us.” Unrealistic self-assessment of driving skills is a problem. I'm part of this aging demographic. It’s safer for me to bicycle/walk, but we need more walk/bike/transit infra!

How will we live when we reach the end of our drivespan? Our cities and suburbs are not designed to cope with the demographic time bomb.lloydalter.substack.comLloyd Alter

The demographic reality is inescapable: We are going to have millions more older drivers with diminishing capabilities, in cars that are too big and too dangerous for everyone around them, with few satisfactory alternatives to driving. It will not end well.

A Berkeley resident who is “an avid cyclist” says they "wouldn’t be caught dead riding in a curbed bike lane." That seems correct because outside of a protected bike lane they are more likely to be hit by a careless/distracted driver and actually be caught/found dead.

I think LED bulbs have led to more light pollution. With apologies to Sting. Oh Ted. You don't have to leave on your porch light. It's always glowing. You leave burning day and night. Oh Ted! Turn off your porch light! Oh Ted! Turn off the porch light! Oh Ted! Turn off the porch light!

Are these 40 year-old signs still relevant? Asking for a friend.

I love this old French bike, but so many questions. The side car thingy is clamped to the head tube, but do the rear wheels share a common axle? And the headlamp. Is it kerosene or carbide or ???

Kamil Ustaszewski

I have spotted the ancestor of all #cargobikes today in France. #bike #bicycle.

1st the BBC, now @outsidemag.bsky.social holding forth on animals most likely to kill to you & they are WAY off. Scorpions, bears, snakes, mt. lions, spiders, hornets, alligators, dogs, cats: These are orders of magnitude less dangerous than a human being behind the wheel of a car. Not even close.

NWS 2x/day atmospheric soundings have resumed at the Oakland airport. 🎉 "Issued at 11:23pm PDT Wednesday July 15 2026 (tonight through Friday) "Fortunately our weather balloons have returned to service with the launch, so let's look at some of the data ..."

John Ewing

Context I left out: NWS uses radiosondes attached to helium-filled ballons to do atmospheric soundings that provide temp/wind readings used in weather forecasting. These ballons are usually launched 2x a day across the US. OAK hasn’t launched one for several days because no helium because … war.

Small world. While walking our dog this afternoon, I saw an unusual cargo bike & called out to the rider, "Is that a MONoPOLE?" It was indeed and the owner kindly stopped, & let me take a closer look. I've lusted after one, but had never seen one in real life. Now I'm thinking N+1, peut-être?
