This is the basis of ecosystem restoration, yeah! A stream will not function well just bc it has native plantings if it has been ditched. It requires proper geomorphology as a baseline. But also, should we expect an urban ecosystem to function the same as exurban/rural?

Conversely, cattails are native, but become a functionally invasive monoculture when there are excess nutrients. Focusing on native vs not only is a limited framework and fails to engage with the complexity of ecosystems.

This is a key point. Native is shorthand abstraction for functionality, and is generally desirable bc of that alignment. English ivy and pansies are both non native, but ivy is invasive and completely disrupts the function of an ecosystem.
