Britain promised to protect Hongkongers from China. Why does it now seem ready to sacrifice us? | Nathan Law
The UK has failed HK people again and again and again. While BN(O) immigration has been granted on 'humanitarian' basis, it's on a temporary basis albeit ability to extend to ILR and citizenship. But it *is* temporary. So... were we ever part of UK territory or not?

Kanis LeungAfter spending more than five years in Hong Kong’s prison, former pro-democracy lawmaker Wu Chi-wai finally got to embrace his wife and son in London last week. But he could be sent back to the Chinese territory in days. His story: apnews.com/article/hong...
UPDATE: Wu said he was eventually allowed to enter, with authorities granting him a seven-day immigration bail. That means he will be removed from the U.K. on Wednesday, he said, cutting short family plans to spend months together. apnews.com/article/hong...
Technically, HKers *would* call themselves anti-leftists. But only because “the left” actually maps to conservative, even reactionary politics in the city because CCP is “the left”. Tycoon-friendly policies, social conservatism, nationalism, anti-LGBTQA+ all represent “the left” …
A thing that’s often hard for anyone outside of HK (and Taiwan?) to wrap their head around is that no opposition would be caught dead calling themselves “the left”, even if the policies pursued are “leftist” in any other place. The reason should be obvious if you think about it for even 2 seconds
Your Friend Temporary MichiganderAlso Taiwan is economically progressive and has universal healthcare! It’s not some right wing anti-lefty island lol

Hong Kong Free Press HKFPHong Kong police have raided two independent bookstores and arrested five people suspected of committing a sedition offence, local media has reported. Police were seen removing large boxes of materials from Have a Nice Stay, a 4th-floor bookstore in Prince Edward, at around 5.30pm on Wednesday.
This photo is one of the ages. And should be made famous.

@mariaressa.bsky.social has been speaking about SM and democracy for some time now, probably the most preeminent voice these days, one of many indeed, one of the few with the weight of state molding her life to this day, she still has dozens of lawsuits against here from the Philippine government
I am proud to share my latest peer-reviewed work with Nathan Kar Ming Chan and John Mok, "Desperate Acts of Democracy: Identity Threat, Autocratization and Voter Turnout in Hong Kong" out now at @chinaquarterly.bsky.social. This piece is very special to us, and likely our last survey study in HK🧵
Commentary: China's new supply-chain regulations could force multinational companies to choose between complying with foreign laws and avoiding legal liability in China, creating major risks for global business operations.
