The UK has failed HK people again and again and again. While BN(O) immigration has been granted on 'humanitarian' basis, it's on a temporary basis albeit ability to extend to ILR and citizenship. But it *is* temporary. So... were we ever part of UK territory or not?

Yes so lucky they put the entire political opposition in prison which lead to hundreds of thousands of people emigrating - to countries which also have free healthcare and dont have a special national security police force

Apart from all the obvious reasons why this is profoundly stupid, the minimum wage in China is $10 per day and it has the 2nd most billionaires in the world. But then again you would have to treat China as a real place and not somewhere you made up in your head

Also it's complicated by the fact a lot of the traditional labour unions and the ones still operating in HK are not trade unions in the way a western leftist would imagine them! Which again is separate to the 2019 push to unionise every possible industry in the fight against the government

Technically, HKers *would* call themselves anti-leftists. But only because “the left” actually maps to conservative, even reactionary politics in the city because CCP is “the left”. Tycoon-friendly policies, social conservatism, nationalism, anti-LGBTQA+ all represent “the left” …

A thing that’s often hard for anyone outside of HK (and Taiwan?) to wrap their head around is that no opposition would be caught dead calling themselves “the left”, even if the policies pursued are “leftist” in any other place. The reason should be obvious if you think about it for even 2 seconds

Also Hong Kong had the first ever gay elected politician in East Asia in Ray 'Slow beat' Chan. Who they of course put in prison and is still serving time now

Yeah this I'm pretty sure is correct. There are definitely some HK 'politicians' who would have no problem with it but Beijing would never allow it. The whole point of the last 5 or 6 years is to give HKers less rights and this issue has got worse on the mainland in the last few years aswell

But things like this where events get canceled because of the venue pulling out is not the HK government going rogue. This is directly from the liason office and/or the national security dept
