I know Emily Wilson—she's a translator colleague, we've taught and hung out at Bread Loaf and been on stage together—which is why it's so amusing to see people mischaracterize her, like, A LOT. She is very chill IRL, I guarantee you she's unbothered by whatever movie or people who disagree with her.

In the 7th grade, I once left behind a folder of stories I wrote for myself at homeroom and Mrs. Plokhooy, who was also my English teacher, returned it to me with a note: "I hope you don't mind, I read these and I REALLY enjoyed them." I am now a novelist in my mid-forties and still have this note.

This is very good advice.

This! Great point. People are so fascinated by computers when they beat humans at chess or go, but those are things we only *think* of as hard, but are actually easy for computers. Translation is perceived in the opposite way, where people *think* it’s easy, but it’s actually hard for computers.

This happens in literature as well. They give us a token seat at the table (or in this case, a completely separate second-tier table) and expect us to pay up and be grateful for it. He has very basic taste tbh, it’s like a list generated through AI or (more likely) committee.
