Genuinely didn’t know this was on streamers. Black Rite is incredible. Discovering that tune via the excellent @graham-bendel.bsky.social was a life changing experience. For years he was the only person I knew with a copy on 7”. Then I found one. So there’s two of us.

Anyway the Northern Soul police are the worst. I have never forgotten discovering that what I (and everyone else) assumed was a bootleg of Job Opening by the Del Larks was actually pressed from the same stamper as the "original" & was therefore sonically identical only to have some grumpy old cunt-

Oh yes. There's a lot of sexism and age-ism about. "How can you be a proper DJ, you weren't there, you don't know about the subculture" etc etc. I'm always careful never to think like that. I love seeing people who are in their late teens and early 20s putting their spin on the music. It's brilliant

- and her music choices are always spectacularly brilliant. It's what's in the groove that counts, not how much you paid for it.

As someone who regularly DJs with people who have re-issues, bootlegs or compilation albums with the songs on, it's whether people are dancing or not that bothers me. One of my favourite DJs of all time hardly has any original 45s in her collection but she's got a canny knack for filling a floor-

This is true. But I am still staggered by how advanced and interesting Chain Gang is compared to pretty much every other British pop record that came after it for around ten years. All that tape delay at the end, all that compression. It sounds incredible. Like something Joe Meek did.

It's fabulous. That's one hell of a well recorded Hammond organ.

One doesn't want to take issue with John Lennon about anything, but Chain Gang by Jimmy Young (yes, that one) from 1956 has good claim to being the most interesting early British response to rock & roll, and sonically sounds a lot like something The Beatles might've wanted to do ten years later.

-the turn of the decade before we begin to see what it's going to have as an intellectual basis. Or maybe there won't be a Tory revival at all, merely a fragmenting of right wing thought into fragments of factions all competing against each other for grift crumbs, which is where it's heading now.
