I'm trying not to buy too many games these days, but I also refuse to feel bad about a Hollandspiele haul.

And it's probably why board games were a good fit for me in the first place, and is certainly why so much of my research work has centered around the three-dimensional toy games of the sixties and seventies, which are often less, uh, ludically compelling to modern tastes. /fin

I think these differences also explain why I have a certain reverence for physical objects, and why the meaning created by the physicality of board games has become an increasing focus of my thinking & work. I don't think Swords Against exists without my brain being wired for physicality.

Another example of this is board games. I tend to play much better when it's a physical game than a digital tabletop like BGA or Tabletopia. I learn games much better when there are actual pieces to touch and move. For her, it makes no difference.

But I tend to focus better when I have a physical object and pages to turn. I have struggled to read longform pieces on my phone or computer. This is certainly an area where she and I differ; the medium makes little difference to her.

After I printed its 205 pages, put them through my hole-puncher, and slid them into a three-ring binder, Samhain was really perplexed by this. As she was when I did the same with the 150 pages of my late subject's ancient single scrolling webpage. Why not just leave them on my computer?
