i briefly saw a comment pointing out that stevens's post on twitter was racist, befitting the platform, and... there's a reason i've limited replies on here; this place is not meaningfully better. i routinely get added to mod lists that i would gently describe as rude, and assertively call libelous

when matt yglesias posts about something you know anything about, you realize he doesn't know anything about that subject; but when he speaks about stuff that you're not intimately familiar with, you just kind of assume he's not so shameless that he would be talking out his ass about that as well.

but... that's not surprising; linkedin doesn't care about that. linkedin cares about eventually carving out a distinction between AI content where one camp represents "AI slop" and another represents "AI content [that's not slop]".

i'm also a little ambivalent about the fact that neurodivergent people have called out, numerous times, that their writing often gets marked as "AI" erroneously, and this intervention continues to be indifferent to that problem.

all to say, i think linkedin is trying to stake out a border between "AI slop" and what i guess they'd like to brand "AI gems" or something. that's one part i'm ambivalent about.

there's no rhetorical aesthetic or style that you can define that an engineer won't get obsessed with emulating, sometimes just to antagonize you. last i checked, there were datasets on huggingface that are just feeds of users who have objected to their posts being scraped without their consent.

we saw a similar "crisis" with visual media where some artists pointed out that criticizing the low quality of AI-generated images and videos is kind of staking out a position on sand. eventually videos looked more realistic, images harder to tell apart from human artists/photographers

mixed feelings on this; neither substack nor linkedin cares about people flooding the space with AI. their shared grievance is the visibility/conspicuousness of the content as "slop". if you can run garbage through pangram and keep iterating until you get a satisfactory score, they'd both be happy.
