The mammalian placenta takes its name from a Roman version of a Greek crêpe or cheesecake.

This is PLACENTA CAKE, an ancient Roman version of a Greek cake, plakóenta (flat plate). It would be cooked on a hot flat surface, like a crêpe & layered with cheese, honey, nuts. Why would they name a cake after the mammalian placenta? They didn't! It's the other way around! (📷: Neill George)

“When your physician refers you to a surgeon, you’ll be given an appointment six to eight months down the road. And if a patient calls and is willing to pay four times as much as the surgeon will get paid from the government for that service, they can get a booking within a week or two" Braden Manns

Smith’s illegal push toward private, for-profit health care threatens universal medicare and appeasing her doesn’t prevent the separatist threat. As I told the Toronto Star: protecting public health care is key to showing Canada works for Albertans. www.thestar.com www.thestar.com/politics/fed...

I think people are mad because she is THOROUGH. When she translated the poem, she did the job. When they asked her to review the movie, SHE DID THE JOB.

“A Penn professor thought she’d sell 1000 copies of her ‘Odyssey’ translation. She sold a million this year alone, thanks to Christopher Nolan.” “West Philly's Emily Wilson, who penned a highly acclaimed translation of the epic poem in 2017, is having a big summer.”

I hope the movie does it justice, Barker's 'The Silence of the Girls' is a great book. I read it and Madeline Miller's 'Song of Achilles' at the same time. If you are looking for a pair of novels to read this summer, give them a try.

Jennifer Kretchmer

While we are in this Greek Mythology moment, may I remind you that Emma Thompson is adapting Pat Barker’s take on The Iliad, and she’s struggled to get it made bc the focus on what acts of war against women and survival thereafter actually look like (the core of Barker’s narrative) is too intense.

I generally like & respect Spencer. But this article was awful. And parachuting into a rural Ohio coffee shop was such a NYT- bullshit political reporting stunt I thought it was satire at first. Agree with the takedown here. /1

I greatly value this thoughtful, evidence-based line-by-line critique by @jeremyfaust.bsky.social of his friend @craigspencer.bsky.social’s MAHA hagiography MAHA is IMHO a hugely destructive anti-vaxx movement whose leaders are dismantling public health insidemedicine.substack.com/p/i-didnt-lo...
