This is PLACENTA CAKE, an ancient Roman version of a Greek cake, plakóenta (flat plate). It would be cooked on a hot flat surface, like a crêpe & layered with cheese, honey, nuts. Why would they name a cake after the mammalian placenta? They didn't! It's the other way around! (📷: Neill George)

Brittney Price explains in this article how Italian anatomist Matteo Realdo Colombo used the term for the expelled "bed" of the fetus because of its resemblance to the popular cake, which was likely related to modern baklava and/or lasagna. Learning can be delicious (or not)!
